CBSE plans to introduce vocational courses in sports

CBSE has proposed to introduce body science fitness, aerobics and health as vocational courses in sports. These courses will prepare students for participating in sporting events professionally and would also open doors to job opportunities at school-leaving level.

The circular mentions that the schools opting for the course should have a gym as the minimum infrastructure within the school premises and should also have a permanent post-graduate teacher in physical education on rolls.

To ensure that the course is taken seriously, CBSE has stated that the physical education teachers of the schools will have to undergo two orientation programmes, each of 15 days duration. Students who opt for the subject will also have to undergo 30-days internship in a gym recognized by the board.

According to CBSE, such courses are likely to increase awareness about sports as a profession in the country. Meanwhile, the board has also proposed to introduce yet another vocational course in sports titled ‘Sports Journalism’.
