Sports and other activities for Burail Jail inmates from May

Inmates of the high-security Burail jail in Chandigarh will be introduced to more recreational and sports activities from next month. While kabaddi and volleyball will be allowed outdoors, chess and carrom are being introduced as indoor activities.

We want to intoduce sports in a big way in jail, and for that we’ve visited the different barracks and tried to measure out the open spaces available where we can set up nets for volleyball, to provide indoor facilities for carrom and chess and perhaps also introduce kabaddi.

The authorities are also planning to introduce sports competitions within the barracks and, later, among winning teams from all the barracks. They hope that besides overcoming idleness among inmates, this initiative will also encourage positive interaction among them.

The sports authorities recently visited Burail Jail to make an assessment of the space and  resources available. This after the Jail department requested the sports authorities to come up with a plan to provide infrastructure, markings on the ground and coaches for the initial training for these games.
