In July 2009, the Unique Identity and Development Authority of India (UIDAI) began the gigantic task of giving an identity to every Indian. Under this project, biometric data of each individual is being collected and they are provided with unique identity cards (UIDs). UIDAI has set the target of issuing 10 lakh Aadhaar numbers a day to cover half the country by 2013. Till now, almost 18 lakh Aadhaar enrollments have taken place. According to some estimates, the cost of the UID project is about Rs 1.5 lakh crores.
In Prime Deabate, we focus on the Aadhaar project and whether it is worth the money and effort being put in.
Discussing the issue will be P. Akbar Ali, Zonal Manager, Central Bank of India; D.P. Khandelia, President, Industries Association, Chandigarh; Prashant Rave, Vice-president of enrollment agency, ILFS; and Randhir Verma, a consumer affairs expert.
