Fazilka is seeing a kinnow glut, the kinnow growers are getting just 5 to 6 rupees a kilogram for the favourite winter fruit even though for consumers in markets like Chandigarh, the selling rate is 30 rupees a kilogram.
No wonder then, that the 3,000 or so kinnow growers have had a particularly bad season this time. Last year, the going rate for kinnows was 25 to 30 rupees per kg.
The orchardists have now sought the intervention of the Punjab government but the state’s Horticulture Department, however, sees the situation differently. It says last year the growers pocketed pretty neat profits because of the low produce and now since there is a bumper crop, the rates are bound to come down and they should learn to live with the profit-loss cycle.
