Delhi’s water woes: Dikshit approaches Centre for help

Taking strong objection to Haryana cutting supply of raw water to Delhi, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has taken up the issue with the Centre as areas across the city continued to reel under severe water crisis. With Haryana slashing normal supply of raw water, production of water at various treatment plants have gone down significantly resulting huge gap in demand and supply.

“This is an injustice by Haryana towards Delhi. It is serious issue,” Dikshit said, criticising the neighbouring state for not releasing adequate quantity of water to Delhi. Sources close to Dikshit said she has taken up the matter with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Group of Ministers headed by Home Minister P Chidambaram seeking early solution to the lingering Munak canal issue.

The GoM was set up last year by the Prime Minister after Delhi and Haryana failed to resolve the dispute. The Munak canal was constructed by Haryana with financial assistance of around Rs 412 crore given by Delhi government on the condition that the national capital will be supplied 80 million gallons per day (MGD) of water from it.

But later, Haryana refused to supply the water to the city. Sources said Dikshit tried to talk to her Haryana counterpart Bhupinder Singh Hooda over phone but to no avail. Chief Secretary Tripathi on Monday had asked his Haryana counterpart P K Chaudhery to release more water to Delhi to address the problem of water shortage, but the latter turned down the request. Describing the situation as serious, Delhi Jal Board officials said production of water at the Haiderpur Water Treatment Plant has gone by 15 MGD due to short supply of raw water by Haryana.
