Judoka Garima knocked out under 90 seconds by Japanese Ueno

Indian judoka Garima Chaudhary’s Olympic debut lasted merely 81 seconds as she was knocked out by Japanese Yoshie Ueno in the first elimination round of the 63kg category, in the London Games today.

Although nothing great was expected from the Meerut girl except a stiff Resistance but she couldn’t even do that as she lost by a margin of 100-0 against one of wold’s top judokas in this category.

The referee stopped the contest in the 81st second as Ueno was awarded an ‘Ippon’ which according to judo rules means maximum points awarded for pinning an opposition with her back touching the mat for 25 seconds. After Ueno pinned Garima down, the Japanese judoka was straightaway awarded 100 points.

Ueno had employed the Kuzure-kesa-gatame technique which paid dividends. Among the Indians, Garima’s stay in the Games was of shortest span — something she would like to forget.

Ueno, on the other hand, has won back to back World Championships in 2009 and 2010 before losing last edition’s finals. Garima can consider herself unlucky to have bumped into such a formidable opposition in the first round itself.

Ueno would like to emulate her elder sister Masai Ueno who has won in 2004 and 2008 Olympics.
