In Amritsar, Indian historian Surinder Kochhar who has frequently visited Pakistan tells a tale of utter neglect towards Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s ancestral haveli in Old Sabzi Mandi area of Gujranwala town.Buried under heaps of garbage the haveli, where Maharaja was born in 1780, has been converted into a dumping ground after Pakistan government decided to construct public toilets and bathrooms in one portion of the haveli.
Not just that colonisers too are eyeing the property to build a shopping mall on haveli’s land. Kochar has now appealed to the government of Punjab and SGPC to take up the matter at the highest level with the Pakistan government.
