A thief surprised by the unexpected return of the tenant threw chillis in her eyes and then rained blows on her head with a hammer. The thief was the drug-addict son of the woman’s neighbor.
On Wednesday a 61 year old woman was critically injured when she walked in on a thief who was ransacking her home. The incident occurred in broad daylight on the campus of the Panjab University. The victim, Heera Devi, had gone out in the morning and when she returned home around 1 p.m. she surprised her neighbour’s son in the act of committing theft by a man at her residence in Punjab university on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at around 1pm in the noon when lady Heera Devi returned to home and her neighbor’s son was already inside the home with the aim of theft. The thief, identified as Sandeep Kumar, threw red chilli powder into her eyes and then struck her on the head repeatedly with a hammer. However Heera Devi raised an alarm. The victim was rushed to the Sector 16 Government Multi Specialty Hospital where she remains in critical condition. Police arrested Sandeep Kumar later in the day.
Police said Sandeep Kumar works as a driver in a private homeopathy college and is a drug addict. He will be produced in court on Thursday. This is the third attack on elderly city residents in the past three days. Aside from the obvious implication for the safety of elderly people in city it also suggests that the price of narcotics is rising and thereby compelling addicts to resort to more and more desperate measures to feed their habit.
