Gopal Kanda continues to elude police

Absconding former Haryana minister Gopal Kanda, accused of abetting the suicide of an ex-employee, evaded police for the third day today even as there was speculation that he may surrender in a Delhi court on Monday.

Fresh raids were conducted at Kanda’s residence in Sirsa last night and sleuths questioned his relatives but he could not be located, a senior police official said. Geetika Sharma, 23, a former air hostess with Kanda’s now defunct MDLR airline, was found hanging in her flat in north west Delhi on Sunday. In a suicide note found at her residence, Geetika alleged she was ending her life due to harassment by Kanda and MDLR official Aruna Chaddha. Both Kanda and Aruna have denied the allegations.

The police official said six teams were searching for Kanda. “Sometimes, it takes time to nab a person. He will be caught. Every person has so many places to take shelter,” the official said, adding that they declared Kanda absconder after he did not come up for questioning despite issuing a notice. The official said the police received the postmortem report last evening and it would be revealed only after they properly go through it. Meanwhile, there was speculation that Kanda would surrender in a Delhi court on Monday. Asked about this, Kanda’s brother Govind said, “Talks are on but what has to be done is not decided yet.”
