Chandigarh MC Officers walked out of meeting

The Municipal Corporation House met on Friday – but to no purpose. Not a single item on the agenda was passed and by lunch time all the MC Officers walked out of the meeting in a huff.

The meeting started out with a question and answer session. Councilors belonging to both ruling and opposition groups fired one sharp question after another at the MC Officers. The discomfort level became unbearable when BJP councilor Saurabh Joshi asked for details about water supply to Mauli Jagran – in particular he wanted to know about chlorination and water sampling in the locality. When the Public Health Department officers replied in vague generalities, frustrated councilors demanded a CBI inquiry into the workings of the department. The suggestion of corruption rankled and the Public Health Department officers walked out of the meeting.

Addressing the Municipal Commissioner, nominated councilor Surinder Bagha said that way back in January he had asking for an inquiry into allegations of corruption. He wanted to know if any inquiry had been conducted, and if not, then why not.

When the MC Officers absented themselves from the meeting, the enraged councilors unanimously resolved that the walk-out was an insult to the House and the city mayor and merited immediate and exemplary disciplinary action against the officers.

The walk-out of the officers did not mean that no reports were submitted to the House nor was there any discussion. Friday’s walk out was not the first. On August 29, 2011, also MC Officers had staged a walk-out.

BJP councilor Satinder Singh raised objections to the MC’s proposed study tours; however, he was in the minority on this issue. All other councilor saw nothing wrong with the tours and was determined to go. Toward the close of the meeting, MC Commissioner VP Singh returned to the House and consulted the mayor. Thereafter they jointly announced another MC House meeting sometime in the coming week.
