Poll campaign begins in Kullu assembly seat

In Kullu election campaign has started amid rifts in both Congress and the BJP. The constituency is all set to witness tough contest between Congress, BJP and the Himachal Lokhit Party, which has fielded former MP Maheshwar Singh.

Candidates of major political parties have kick started their election campaign in Kullu witness. The constituency is all set for a triangular contest between Congress, BJP and Himachal Lokhit Morcha.

What makes it one the most high profile constituencies is the presence of Maheshwar Singh in election fray. Kullu is Maheshwar Singh’s political stronghold in more than one way. Singh is not only the scion of erstwhile Kullu royal family and also former BJP MP from Mandi. He is now contesting from Kullu as Himachal Lokhit Party candidate and will begin his election campaign today.

Maheshwar Singh politically outweighs candidates of all other parties. However, nominees of both BJP and Congress are ready to take on the daunting task of giving Singh a tough fight. Hence BJP nominee Ram Singh started his poll campaign from Raghunath temple in the presence of hundreds of his followers and supporters accompanied him.

Congress Candidate Sunder Thakur also started his poll campaign by visiting several villages in Manikaran.

As if Maheshwar Singh’s presence wasn’t enough to make the election battle tough for Congress and BJP, infighting over ticket allocation has inflicted a major setback. Both the parties are a divided house with disgruntled hopefuls launching themselves as independents…Congress ticket aspirant Prem Lata Thakur and wife of former Minister Satya Prakash Thakur, a Virbhadra loyalist has decided to contest as independent candidate.

And BJP isn’t aloof from the rebel trouble. Party’s ticket hopeful Pratap Thakur, who’s a close ally of forest Minister Khimi Ram Sharma will soon take a call whether to contest as an independent after he was denied ticket.
