Chandigarh master plan

Not even le corbusier could have imagined that what he prepared was the only master plan the city ever witnessed..It has been more than 60 years and the city beautiful is devoid of any kind of a master plan…It has been almost 5yrs when the committee was constituted to formulate the plan, sadly the work on the master plan is still underway.

UT administration officials are putting their best to come up with a new and the only master plan in last 60yrs for the city beautiful..The population statistics are witnessing a huge upsurge, the population census for the year 2011 has produced a whopping figure of 11lakh and more. The draft plan, which was recently submitted, projects 16 lakh population in the city by 2030, and thus, has recommendations from the committee constituted for the master plan for future expansion, keeping in view the estimated population.

The master plan proposes the optimum utilization of the empty spaces in the city.Emphasis would be laid on building the long pending development projects. Speaking about the immediate planning projects, an architect and a nominated councillor Surinder Bagha feels it would require a lot of effort and hard work for the officials to sought out all the problems being faced by the residents. It would be beneficial if they first initiate building of underground parking facilities and then move towards rehabilitating the slums. Moreover, the councillor also feels that for any city to develop, people’s opinion is a must.

The work on preparation of the master plan was started in 2008, but its progress has been marred by delays and the administration had to seek several extensions for its completion. The recent one being on March 4th, when UT administration sought some more time from the Punjab and Haryana high court for finalising the ‘Master Plan-2031′ for the city. The next date of hearing has been fixed for July 15. Its not that the city residents would not be able to put in their opinion, the UT administration will give a few weeks’ time to the city residents to submit their suggestions and objections. So why not prepare your wish list, the way you want your city to be.
